Souper Escape cruises to La Lorgnette victory

Ron Gierkink|Sep 01, 2019
Souper Escape wins the 2019 La Lorgnette Stakes
Michael Burns Souper Escape returned $19 for her victory Sunday in the La Lorgnette Stakes.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Souper Escape completed a sweep of Maryland shippers in Sunday’s Woodbine stakes when winning the $104,000 La Lorgnette for 3-year-old fillies.

Souper Escape ($19) assumed an early stalking position before fighting off Naughty Me up front on the far turn. She opened up a clear lead entering the stretch, and then coasted home on top by 3 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:42.71 for the 1 1/16 miles.

La Feve, another invader from the Fair Hill Training Center, finished just behind runner-up Bold Script in third. The favored Wings of Dawn was a belated fourth, and was followed by Power Gal, Winandyourin Gin, and Naughty Me.

Luis Contreras won his third race on the card aboard the Mike Trombetta-trained Souper Escape. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro earned $60,000 for Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation.

Powell wins first stakes in Ontario Jockey Club

Powell ran to his attractive pre-race appearance when taking Sunday’s $100,200 Ontario Jockey Club, a six-furlong overnight stakes for 3-year-olds.

Powell ($11.60) covered the six furlongs in 1:09.23, under Rafael Hernandez. Trained by Mike Stidham, the son of Munnings banked $60,000 in his first stakes score for DARRS Inc.

Big Drink of Water held off the favored Olympic Runner for second in the eight-horse field.
