OCEANPORT, N.J. – Trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. believed Souper Colossal was a special 2-year-old from the time the colt came off the farm and into his barn. So far, nothing has dented Plesa’s enthusiasm. Souper Colossal puts a 2-for-2 record on the line in his toughest test yet, the Sapling Stakes on Sunday at Monmouth Park. “It’s been our target race all along,” Plesa said. “He’s coming into the race 110 percent, training great, doing great. I think he’s a quality 2-year-old – no ifs, ands, or buts – so we’re anxious for the race.” The Sapling and the Sorority Stakes for fillies, the meet’s top juvenile events, head the Sunday card as the Labor Day weekend continues on the Jersey Shore. The Sapling lost its graded status this year. The race, once captured by notables such as Buckpasser, Alydar, and Bet Twice, is now a $100,000 listed stakes with a new wrinkle. Traditionally run at six furlongs, the Sapling now stretches out to one mile. “I’m not concerned about that,” Plesa said of the additional distance for his son of War Front. “You never really know until you run that distance, but with his pedigree, he shouldn’t have a problem.” Souper Colossal has been nothing short of super this meet. He debuted with a solid victory at 4 1/2 furlongs and returned to dust five rivals in the off-the-turf Tyro Stakes at five furlongs Aug. 3. Overcoming an early stumble, Souper Colossal withstood early pressure to prevail by 3 3/4 lengths. He lands the outside post in the seven-horse Sapling, with Paco Lopez, the meet’s leading rider, aboard. Plesa and Lopez combined to win the 2012 Sapling with Brave Dave. The Sorority, the $75,000 sister event once captured by Ruffian, remains at six furlongs. Plesa entered two in the Sorority: Perpetual Novena, the second-place finisher here in the Colleen Stakes on turf, and Concealedwithakiss, a debut winner owned by his wife, Laurie. “She should improve off that effort,” Plesa said of Perpetual Novena. Concealedwithakiss won her lone start in a claimer over a sloppy track by 11 1/4 lengths. “She ran a bang-up race,” Plesa said. “I had no place else to run the horse, so we’re throwing her into the mix.” Coco’s Wildcat is the only stakes winner in the Sorority, having romped in the Cassidy Stakes at Gulfstream Park in her most recent effort. Sorority, race 9 KEY CONTENDERS Perpetual Novena (Last 2 Beyers: 65-54) ◗ Switches back to the main track after getting second on grass as the 2-1 favorite in Monmouth’s Colleen Stakes. Trainer Plesa wins at a robust 33 percent clip over the last two years on the turf-to-dirt angle. Had no problems handling the main track here in her winning debut. Coco’s Wildcat (Last Beyer: 67) ◗ The lone stakes winner in the field, Coco’s Wildcat dominated the Cassidy Stakes at Gulfstream Park in mid-July. She should be well acclimated here, with three local workouts since the Cassidy. Sapling, race 11 KEY CONTENDERS Souper Colossal (Last 2 Beyers: 73-67) ◗ A perfect 2 for 2 at the meet, with Beyers moving in the right direction. Overcame a stumble at the break to professionally go about his business in winning the off-the-turf Tyro Stakes. This son of War Front has the pedigree to handle the stretch-out from five furlongs to a mile. Wild Zambezi (Last 2 Beyers: 60-42) ◗ The only proven winner in the race at one mile, scoring the win here earlier this month. Trainer Todd Pletcher and Eddie Castro, now his go-to rider at the meet, are 9 for 27 here over the last two years.
