HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – With a pedigree that suggests turf and distance, and a victory over a synthetic track in his career debut, Souper Blessing could prove to be a bit of a sleeper when facing seven other Florida-bred 2-year-olds in Saturday’s $60,000 The Juvenile. The Juvenile shares top billing on the card with the $60,000 The Juvenile Fillies. Both races will be decided at a mile and 70 yards over Tapeta. Souper Blessing, a Live Oak Plantation homebred by Temple City, launched his career Sept. 20 at Presque Isle Downs, rallying from last to a 3 1/4-length victory going six furlongs, circling the field and drawing off impressively despite banging the gate at the start. “He’s got more turf pedigree than dirt and I chose to run him first time at Presque Isle because he’d trained pretty well over the synthetic track at Fair Hill,” trainer Michael Trombetta said. “With his pedigree and the way he’s built, more like a distance horse, I wasn’t sure he could get up going six furlongs the first time, but when the rider asked him to run, he took off pretty good. I’m not sure what he beat, but visually it certainly was an impressive effort.” Trombetta said at that point he decided to send Souper Blessing to Gulfstream and target The Juvenile. He arrived in time to get in a prep for the race, a third-place finish behind the heavily favored Turbo in the seven-furlong Juvenile Sprint run over the main track three weeks ago. “It’s hard to run a 2-year-old winner on the turf up here, so I sent him down with this race as my goal,” Trombetta said. “I tried him once on the dirt to get a race into him first, and frankly he ran better than I expected him to. It looked like he worked well over the Tapeta track there last weekend, so I’m hoping he’s sitting on another big race Saturday.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! Souper Blessing will break from post 7 with Samy Camacho aboard. Dangerous Ride, who finished second in the Juvenile Sprint, a neck in front of Souper Blessing, returns to the synthetic track over which he won his maiden at first asking during the spring. Dangerous Ride will be trying two turns for the second time, having finished fifth after being taken back to last and racing wide around the final turn in the mile and 70-yard Armed Forces earlier in the meet. Tigre and Cheerful Charlie, first and second, respectively, in the Armed Forces, may vie for favoritism in The Juvenile. The former returns on less than a week’s rest after running a very disappointing seventh as the even-money favorite against open allowance company over the Tapeta last Sunday. Cheerful Charlie, far and away the most experienced member of this field, finished a neck behind Tigre after drawing clear through midstretch in the Armed Forces. :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances – the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures Maximo, who rushed to the lead and then stopped badly to finish last in the Armed Forces, has been gelded since that outing and also will race with blinkers off when returning in The Juvenile. He figures to be the one to catch once again in a field that also includes last-out maiden winners Anamnestic and Captain Anthony, along with Big Save. ◗ The Juvenile Fillies lured a very wide open field of seven, including four last-out maiden winners, Oh Darlin, La Panda, Luck in the Dusk, and Navy Goat. Oh Darlin owns the highest Beyer Speed Figures in the field but has yet to run beyond 5 1/2 furlongs. La Panda graduated at a mile over the synthetic at Presque Isle while Luck in the Dusk may have the most upside, not only having won around two turns but having done so over the local course with the addition of blinkers on Oct. 29. Navy Goat has been idle since graduating on the turf at Kentucky Downs on Sept 14. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
