ETOBICOKE, Ontario − Souped Up registered a 10-1 upset while notching his first stakes under a jubilant Emma-Jayne Wilson in Saturday’s Grade 3 Bold Venture at Woodbine.
Souped Up ($23.40) attended a moderate pace set by Western Whirl in the 6 1/2-furlong Tapeta sprint and then hooked up with Western Whirl early in the stretch. Western Whirl gave way grudgingly in the final sixteenth and Souped Up prevailed by a head, in a time of 1:17.06.
Favored Notorious Gangster rallied outside to finish another three-quarters of a length back in third. It’s Bourbon Thirty, Poulin in O T, Awesome Bourbon, and Baxley competed the order of finish. G T Five Hundred was scratched.
Trained by Ron Sadler, Souped Up earned $105,000 of the $186,550 purse for the partnership of Linda Thiel and Harri Hosein, who claimed the son of Souper Speedy for $25,000 in 2023.
“This horse comes every single time to play,” Wilson said. “I rode him quite few years back and have always been a fan of his, watching him run. Ron does a fantastic job. Every one of Ron’s horses come to play every time, and he did it today. The trip was beauty. I said just off [Western Whirl]. He dug, and every time I asked him for more, he gave me more.”
