Soup and Sandwich to return in Perryville Stakes

The gray colt Soup and Sandwich will make his first start since finishing last of 19 in the May 1 Kentucky Derby when he goes postward Saturday in the $150,000 Perryville Stakes at Keeneland.
Soup and Sandwich ran second to Known Agenda in the Florida Derby on March 27 before fading badly to finish far back in the Kentucky Derby. After getting several months at the Ocala, Fla., farm of trainer Mark Casse, the colt has trained in recent weeks at Churchill Downs with Casse assistant David Carroll.
“He’s changed a lot,” Casse said. “We threw a whole lot at him, and he’s really grown up now. He’s gone from a boy to a man.”
The Perryville, held sporadically by Keeneland since 1999, is one of several new or revived stakes at the fall meet. The seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds is a supporting feature on a 10-race Saturday card highlighted by the Grade 2, $250,000 Raven Run for 3-year-old fillies. Saturday entries are drawn Wednesday.

The other stakes this week are the Grade 3 Sycamore for 3-year-olds and up on Friday and the Grade 3 Dowager for fillies and mares on Sunday. Both are at 1 1/2 miles on turf. The meet runs through Oct. 30.
◗ The $3-minimum Keeneland Turf Pick 3 on Thursday comprises races 4-6-8.
