Sonoma Cat just misses track record

OPELOUSAS, La. - Sonoma Cat ($4.80), stalking the pace under Randall Toups, wore down a stubborn Missed the Prom in the final furlong to capture Saturday night's $60,000 Oak Hall Stakes at Evangeline Downs by three-quarters of a length.

State Power finished third in the seven-furlong race. Morning line favorite Greeley's Conquest was a late scratch.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Sonoma Cat picked up his first stakes win and third victory from eight career starts. A 4-year-old Storm Cat colt, Sonoma Cat earned $36,000 for owners Stonestreet Stables and has now bankrolled slightly more than $127,000.

The final time over a track labeled fast was 1:22.56, just missing the track record of 1:22.43.
