Songbird will get break before 2017 campaign, trainer says

ARCADIA, Calif. – Songbird, who suffered the first loss of her career when beaten a nose by Beholder in a thrilling Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Friday, will head to Kentucky this week for a brief freshening at WinStar Farm before resuming her campaign next year at age 4, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Sunday morning at Santa Anita.
This is the same itinerary Hollendorfer used last year with Songbird after she won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland.
“She’ll have 30 to 45 days, and come back before the first of the year,” Hollendorfer said. “She’ll get looked over from head to toe.”
As for what kind of campaign Songbird will have next year, Hollendorfer said, “You can’t really make plans until you start training and see where she’s at.”
