Songbird on track for Las Virgenes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Songbird, the undefeated winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland on Oct. 31, worked a half-mile in 47.20 seconds at Santa Anita on Friday.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Songbird is on schedule to make her 2016 debut in the $300,000 Las Virgenes Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at a mile here Feb. 6. Songbird was turned out at a Kentucky farm for a month after the BC Juvenile Fillies and rejoined Hollendorfer’s stable in early December.
“She doesn’t seem to have lost much from her little break,” Hollendorfer said. “I think we can make that race.”
Hollendorfer said Songbird is a focused filly during racing and training but is calm in the stable.
“She’s all business on the racetrack, but around the barn, she doesn’t show all that enthusiasm,” Hollendorfer said. “Nothing seems to bother her. I’ve never had a filly as good as her that wasn’t more on the muscle and not trying to bite you.”
Owned by Rick Porter, Songbird has won four races and earned $1,502,000.
