Songbird slated to resume training Sunday

CYPRESS, Calif. – Songbird, the undefeated champion 2-year-old filly of 2015, is scheduled to resume training at Santa Anita on Sunday after being sidelined with a fever.
The fever resulted in Songbird being withdrawn from consideration for the $1 million Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 6.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said on Thursday that Songbird has recovered from the fever, which was detected a few days after her win in the Santa Anita Oaks on April 9. She was treated with antibiotics on April 17.
“Everything is looking good,” Hollendorfer said. “She is likely to go back to the track on Sunday.”
Owned by Rick Porter, Songbird would have been a heavy favorite for the Kentucky Oaks. Hollendorfer said on Thursday that he will watch Songbird train before making plans on her next start.
“We’ll see how she does on the track,” he said.
There is one graded stakes for 3-year-old fillies at the Santa Anita spring-summer meeting – the Grade 2, $200,000 Summertime Oaks at 1 1/16 miles on June 18.
By Medaglia d’Oro, Songbird has earned $1,982,000 and has won six stakes, including four Grade 1 races.
