Songbird gets in final major work for Phipps
ARCADIA, Calif. – Songbird, the two-time champion, had her final major workout before the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park on June 10, going seven furlongs in 1:25.40 at Santa Anita on Wednesday.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer described the workout as “nice and smooth.”
Songbird will be flown to New York on June 7 for the $750,000 Phipps Stakes, her first start since a second in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita last November. The BC Distaff is Songbird’s only loss in 12 starts. Owned by Rick Porter, Songbird was the champion 2-year-old filly of 2015, and 3-year-old filly of 2016.
Hollendorfer said Songbird will have “a little blowout” on Tuesday before the trip.
