Some stakes purses cut
Hollywood Park released the stakes schedule for its spring-summer meeting on Friday, a day after an agreement was reached between track officials and the Thoroughbred Owners of California over the amount of money that should be dedicated to stakes. Hollywood wanted to reduce purses for overnight races from last year while essentially maintaining last year's stakes schedule, while the TOC wanted to reduce stakes purses and maintain overnight purse levels at previous levels.
The 54-race schedule is worth $9.475 million, compared to 51 stakes worth $9.46 million on the schedule last year. But the purses of 18 races have been cut from the 2005 calendar.
There are three $750,000 races on the schedule - the CashCall Mile on July 1, the American Oaks on July 2, and the Hollywood Gold Cup on July 8.
The most significant reductions came in several major stakes. Four major stakes had their purses cut $50,000, to $300,000: the Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile and Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap on May 29, the Charles Whittingham Handicap on June 10, and the Triple Bend Breeders' Cup Handicap on July 2. The purse for the Jim Murray Memorial Handicap on May 14 has been cut $100,000, to $250,000.
Track officials said the reductions were necessary because Hollywood is running on 12 weekends during the meet, which runs from April 26 to July 16, rather than the usual 13. Betting, and therefore revenue, is higher on weekend cards.
