Some roster changes in Pool 3

Marty McGee|Apr 04, 2006

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Eight more new names are in the 23-horse lineup for the third and final pool in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens Thursday at noon Eastern for the customary four-day run at tracks and wagering outlets throughout North America.

Although the results of critical Derby preps this weekend surely will influence the final odds in Pool 3, the 7-2 morning-line favorite is Brother Derek, who will race Saturday in the Santa Anita Derby. Unlike the first two pools, when relatively few important Derby preps coincided with the Future Wager pools, there are three major preps being run this Saturday - the Wood Memorial, Illinois Derby, and Santa Anita Derby - which means that many fans probably will wait until those races have been run to wager. Final odds are determined when the pool closes at 6 p.m. Eastern on Sunday.

In Pool 2, which was held March 2-5, there were nine new names compared with Pool 1 (Jan. 26-29). Only 11 horses have been listed as separate wagering interests in all three pools.

The new names for Pool 3 are A. P. Warrior, Deputy Glitters, Discreet Cat, Like Now, Sacred Light, Sharp Humor, Sunriver, and With a City. They replace the following from Pool 2: Barbican, Corinthian, Flashy Bull, Great Point, Itsallboutthechase, Latent Heat, Noonmark, and Really Indian.

The field - the "all others," or 24th, alternative to the 23 separately listed wagering interests - closed as the favorite in each of the first two pools.

Meanwhile, Pool 3 in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager also is being held Thursday through Sunday, and as with the Derby, there are a substantial number of changes since Pool 2. There are nine new names: Brownie Points, Bushfire, Ermine, Miraculous Miss, Quiet Kim, Ready to Please, Sweet Fourty, Teammate, and Top Notch Lady. They replace the following from Pool 2: Baghdaria, Better Now, Folklore, Joint Effort, Misty Rosette, Original Spin, Private World, Sabatini, and Sierra Sweetie.

Sweet Fourty was considered unlikely for the Oaks by trainer Jeff Mullins.

As with Derby Pool 3, the morning-line favorite for Oaks Pool 3 is scheduled to be in action on Saturday: Balance (7-2) is being pointed to the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland.

Aggregate handle on the first two Derby pools was $1,016,863; the first two Oaks pools drew just $120,602. The three-pool record for total handle on the Derby futures was set last year with $1,665,990.

Results of both pools are predicated on the May 5 Oaks and May 6 Derby at Churchill Downs. There are no refunds in the futures, which are $2-minimum, win-only wagers.

Morning-line odds are set by Churchill linemaker Mike Battaglia. Lineups are set by John Asher of Churchill, and Brad Free and Mike Watchmaker of Daily Racing Form.
