Solomon, clocker, dies

Marty McGee|Apr 17, 2006

Marven Michael "Mickey" Solomon, who worked as the head clocker at Churchill Downs and Keeneland for Daily Racing Form for 30 years, died Monday at Norton Hospital in his hometown of Louisville, Ky., following a long illness. He was 76.

Solomon, born and raised in Detroit, worked for the Racing Form from 1968 to 1997, primarily in Kentucky but also at Oaklawn Park and Gulfstream Park. In recent years he had worked part-time as a clocker at Keeneland and Gulfstream.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Myra Solomon, a longtime mutuel clerk at Churchill; their daughter, Cheryl Tipton; and two grandchildren.

Visitation and a memorial service will be held Wednesday at the Heady-Hardy Funeral Home on Dixie Highway in Louisville.
