Solitude Dude, a runaway debut winner at Gulfstream Park, looms a short-priced favorite in a field of seven 2-year-olds entered to run six furlongs in Saturday’s $125,000 Inaugural Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. A son of Yaupon who brought $300,000 at an Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. 2-year-olds in training sale, Solitude Dude sped off to a 9 1/2-length victory on Nov. 1 at Gulfstream. “We liked him from the start, but he had to go out there and do it, and he did it as good as you could ask one to do it,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “We never let him out because we knew he could run. It was no surprise that he won. He acted like he was a horse with ability.” Joseph believes Solitude Dude could probably stretch out as far as a mile, but he likes this six-furlong spot for the colt’s first race against winners. “The second race gives you an idea of what kind of talent he has. You face winners,” Joseph said. “We think he has talent. Hopefully, he shows it again this weekend.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Solitude Dude showed some talent in his most recent workout, going a half-mile in 46.60 seconds on Nov. 29 at Palm Meadows. “We gave him a target, he sat off a horse, he went by the horse really, really easy with his ears pricked,” Joseph said. “I thought it was a phenomenal work.” Edgard Zayas rides Solitude Dude from the outside post. Joseph also sends out Langvad, Florida-bred son of Awesome Slew who was a second-out winner going seven furlongs after finishing second going 5 1/2 furlongs in his debut. He earned a 52 Beyer Speed Figure in both starts. “I think he’s better than his numbers. His numbers are slow, to put [it] in the nicest way,” Joseph said. “I think six furlongs is probably better than seven. I don’t think he’s in Solitude Dude’s class, but I think he’ll run well.” Thunder Chuck, second with the addition of blinkers in the Juvenile Sprint at Gulfstream Park, looms a possible threat to Solitude Dude. Max Capacity, Super Kick, Go Simple, and Undertaker complete the field. The Inaugural goes as race 2 on a 10-race card that begins at 12:30 p.m. Sandpiper Stakes Sneaky Good wasn’t so sneaky, but she was very good when she won her debut at Keeneland by 4 3/4 lengths as the 2-1 favorite in a field of nine on Oct. 5. Saturday, Sneaky Good will face nine other 2-year-old fillies in the $125,000 Sandpiper Stakes at six furlongs. A daughter of Into Mischief, Sneaky Good faced significant pace pressure in her debut, but she ran away from her rivals in the stretch to win fairly easily. :: Get the Inside Track with the FREE DRF Morning Line Email Newsletter. Some of these have more seasoning. She’s light in that department, but she’s talented. I thought she beat a good group first time. She showed up and ran big and trained well since.” Sneaky Good will break from post 10 under Antonio Gallardo. Joseph believes My Miss Mo has graded stakes potential. After losing her first start by a nose, My Miss Mo came back to win her second start by 12 lengths. Both races were restricted to Florida-breds. “Maybe she didn’t beat the strongest field last time. We feel she’s a graded stakes filly,” Joseph said. “Though she won by 12, we didn’t see what we think she is still. It was a big surprise she got beat first time.” Zayas rides My Miss Mo from post 5. Joseph also sends out Tahlequah, who finished second, beaten a half-length, on debut Nov. 16 at Gulfstream. Freaks Go, a daughter of Knicks Go trained by Rohan Crichton, won a six-furlong maiden race Oct. 26 at Churchill Downs. Evolution, who has already raced six times, is coming off a dominant first-level allowance win at Gulfstream for trainer Carlos David and gets the services of leading rider Samuel Marin. Gerrards Cross, trained by Kathleen O’Connell, is 2 for 2 with an allowance win on dirt in June at Gulfstream and a 2 1/2-length victory in the Colleen Stakes on turf at Monmouth Park in July. Summer Winner, who won a Minnesota-bred stakes at Canterbury; Tremont Tammy, who is in from Prairie Meadows; Techstar; and Blazing Brat complete the field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
