Sokudo looks to add to success in busy year
Sokudo has thrived in one-turn races for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses at 870 and 1,000 yards at Los Alamitos. Sokudo’s competition has largely come from fellow Thoroughbreds.
Saturday, Sokudo will have his 12th start of the year against five Thoroughbreds in a $20,000 allowance race at 1,000 yards at Los Alamitos. No Quarter Horse were entered, which has become commonplace in such races this year.
Owned and trained by Jesus Uranga, Sokudo has won 6 of 11 starts this year, all at Los Alamitos.

A 7-year-old Louisiana-bred gelding, Sokudo won a starter allowance June 27 for horses who have run for an $8,000 claiming tag. That race came at the Los Alamitos daytime Thoroughbred meet, but Sokudo otherwise has been racing at the evening meeting of Quarter Horses and lower-level Thoroughbreds.
Sokudo has won his last two starts, both at 1,000 yards – a $12,500 claimer on Aug. 9 and an allowance race on Sept. 5. In both races, Sokudo was ridden by Ramon Guce and led throughout, finishing ahead of Rinse and Repeat and Make It a Triple, who are part of Saturday’s field.
Sokudo’s main rival appears to be the closer Chico Baby, who has won his last three starts, all 1,000-yard allowance races from early July to late August.
The 1,000-yard allowance race is the last of eight races on Saturday’s program.
The third race is a 1,000-yard allowance race for fillies and mares who have not won at the distance. The race, which drew six, all Thoroughbreds, is led by Ron’s Cat, who won an $8,000 claimer at 870 yards in March and was second in an allowance race at 1,000 yards on Sept. 12 in her only subsequent start.
