Socks edges Spring Steen in More Than Even Stakes
Socks was up for a neck win over Spring Steen in the $55,000 More Than Even Stakes on Monday at Will Rogers Downs. It was another three-quarters of a length back to She’s Shiney in third.
Inagoodway, who had won the last two runnings of the More Than Even, was scratched, leaving a four-horse field in the 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares bred in Oklahoma.
Socks ($36.80) trailed in the early stages as 1-2 favorite She’s Shiney took the field through an opening quarter in 22.44 seconds. Spring Steen took over from there, setting fractions of 45.76 for the half-mile and 1:10.45 for six furlongs as Socks advanced, caught the leader, and covered the distance on a fast track in 1:45.95.
Floyd Wethey Jr. was aboard the winner for trainer Kenneth Nolen.
Socks is a daughter of Maclean’s Music who races for her breeder, Kelly Thiesing. She was winning her first stakes in the More Than Even. Socks has now won 4 of 24 starts and earned $179,354. She came into the race off a fourth-place finish in an allowance at Will Rogers.
