Social Misfit, at 9, finally a stakes winner
Social Misfit delivered a big upset Saturday night when he defeated Mobile Bay in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Classic at Evangeline Downs. But aside from taking down a two-time Louisiana-bred horse of the year who was 1-2 to win his sixth straight stakes, Social Misfit achieved an additional milestone.
“It’s amazing that he was finally able to get his first stakes win – it doesn’t happen very often at the ripe old age of 9,” said Karl Broberg, who co-owns and trains Social Misfit.
“So many things went our way that day. The favorite didn’t fire. Another broke out of there slowly. We got a really good trip. The horse loves that track. All the stars just happened to align.”
Broberg took a chance on Social Misfit last year when he claimed the horse for $20,000 out of a win at Evangeline on June 9. In his first start off the claim, he lost the 2017 Louisiana Legends Classic by a head.
Broberg said Social Misfit has returned to Lone Star Park. Broberg said he might enter him in the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Day Turf Classic at Louisiana Downs on Aug. 4 in hopes the race comes off the grass. There is no dirt race for him on that program.
Broberg is the leading trainer at Evangeline and Lone Star Park, and was tied atop the standings at Louisiana Downs through Sunday.
◗ Caroline the Great and Roussalka form an imposing entry for Wednesday’s sixth race at Louisiana Downs, a first-level allowance for fillies and mares at about 7 1/2 furlongs on turf. Caroline the Great was second at this level last out at Louisiana Downs, while Roussalka was third in an optional $25,000 claimer last out at Lone Star Park. Tracey Glover trains both horses for TOLO Thoroughbreds.
◗ Wednesday night’s card at Evangeline opens with a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds bred in Louisiana. The probable favorite is Canrunalittle off a runner-up finish in his debut May 12 at Evangeline.
