Social Inclusion breezes; owner still hopes to make it to Derby

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Wednesday was a good morning for Social Inclusion, who worked a sharp three furlongs here in 35.04 seconds over a muddy track. Social Inclusion also moved a step closer to earning a place in the Kentucky Derby field when it was announced that Florida Derby winner Constitution had been taken out of consideration for the race due to injury.
Social Inclusion broke off at the three-eighths pole shortly after the renovation break and was in hand throughout what was little more than a maintenance breeze, completing his final quarter over the wet track in 23.11 before galloping out a half-mile in 47.60.
“I thought his work this morning was tremendous,” said owner Ron Sanchez. “He surprised me how well he went this morning since it was just supposed to be an easy breeze. This horse just keeps improving every day.”
Sanchez reiterated what he said last weekend: If Social Inclusion has enough points to get into the Kentucky Derby field, he would run. If not, he would be pointed to the Preakness.
As of Wednesday, Social Inclusion was 26th on the points list for the Kentucky Derby. Only 20 are allowed to run.
“That’s a shame what happened to Constitution, but it does moves us a little closer,” said Sanchez. “It was really bad luck losing a spot in the Derby by a nose, like we did after finishing third in the Wood.”
Sanchez said if Social Inclusion does not make the Derby field, he probably would have a prep prior to the Preakness in a yet-to-be-determined race. There is a one-mile overnight stakes for 3-year-olds here scheduled for Kentucky Derby Day, the Sir Bear.
