Soaringforthesun takes Jack Diamond, U Did It wins Sadie Diamond
Soaringforthesun got away with moderate fractions on his way to a convincing four-length victory over Mount Asgard in the $50,000 Jack Diamond Maturity on Sunday at Hastings Racecourse.
He paid $7.10 and posted a final time of 1.17.58 in the 6 1/2-furlong dash for 3-year-olds bred or sired in British Columbia.
With Amadeo Perez aboard, Soaringforthesun was under some pressure from Mount Asgard while posting a half-mile time of 47.19 seconds. He opened a clear lead on the stretch turn before winning decisively. Mount Asgard broke a half-step slow from the rail and was intimidated early. After getting into the clear, he raced erratically while chasing the winner and was able to hold off Regal Riot by a neck. Regal Riot broke sharply, was eased off the moderate pace, and rallied late.
A homebred son of Sungold, Soaringforthesun races for David and Sylvea Gregory.

Soaringforthesun is trained by Edgar Mendoza, who also won the $50,000 Sadie Diamond Maturity with heavily favored U Did It. She paid $2.40 and remained undefeated in four starts.
Ridden by Antonio Reyes, U Did It also took them all the way and set honest interior fractions of 22.24 and 46.21, on her way to a 1 3/4-length victory over Shamra and Marys Tappin Shoes, who dead-heated for second in the 6 1/2-furlong dash for 3-year-old fillies bred or sired in B.C.
Shamra, trained by Mendoza, chased her stablemate the whole way and finished on even terms with Marys Tappin Shoes, who came from a stalking position.
The final time was 117.65.
A daughter of Teide, U Did It races for John Anderson. She was bred by Christine Ammann, who is the assistant trainer for Mendoza.
