So Happy taking a break before Del Mar

Barbara D. Livingston Trainer Mark Glatt is giving So Happy a brief freshening after finishing ninth in the Kentucky Derby.

ARCADIA, Calif. – So Happy, the Santa Anita Derby winner who finished ninth in the Kentucky Derby, is taking a midseason break from the racetrack before he resumes training this summer at Del Mar.

“He’s getting a little break, he’s at the farm,” trainer Mark Glatt said Saturday. So Happy was recently shipped from Santa Anita to Trifecta Equine Athletic Center in North San Diego County.

Glatt expects So Happy to resume training after the Del Mar meet opens on July 17. “It’s a short break,” Glatt said. “He’ll be back during Del Mar.”

Glatt said there is no specific target for So Happy. A late-season campaign will be formulated after he resumes workouts.

So Happy, a Runhappy colt owned by Saints or Sinners and Norman Stables, has won three races and $480,000 from five starts.

Boss Sully headed to Saratoga

The stakes-winning turf sprinter Boss Sully will follow the recent pattern of many top California-based runners: beat softer locals, then ship out of state to face tougher rivals for more money.

Winner of the $100,000 Siren Lure Stakes in his comeback on May 10, Boss Sully is targeting the $200,000 Harvey Pack Stakes on July 5, a 5 1/2-furlong turf stakes at Saratoga, according to trainer Brian Koriner.

“He’s probably going to go to Saratoga. That’s what it looks like at the moment,” Koriner said last weekend. “[Saratoga] will be something new, but he’s handled shipping.”

Boss Sully shipped from California to Kentucky in spring 2025 and finished second in the Grade 2 Twin Spires Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs.

A 6-year-old gelding by Street Boss, Boss Sully has won six races and $469,392 from 17 starts. Boss Sully is owned by Rusty Brown, Alan Klein, and Philip Lebherz. After the Grade 3, $100,000 Daytona Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita, the next turf sprint stakes in California that is open to older males is the Grade 2, $200,000 Green Flash Handicap on Aug. 22 at Del Mar.
