Smuggler's Hold comes from off pace to win derby

Bill Tallon|Aug 04, 2009

Invaders dominated Monday's $75,000 Manitoba Derby, with Smuggler's Hold and Tease the Tiger finishing one-two in the 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds at Assiniboia Downs.

Smuggler's Hold, with Adolfo Morales in the irons, came from off the pace to take charge around the final turn and go on to score by three-quarters of a length.

Tease the Tiger also came from out of it and was up in the final strides to finish second ahead of another closer, the longshot Celtic Thane.

Theglow was prominent throughout but lacked a closing response while ending fourth as the 4-1 third choice.

Hilton's Cherokee, the slight choice at 2.20-1, set the pace but faltered to finish fifth in the field of 10.

Smuggler's Bold, trained by Tim Padilla, returned $6.50 and combined with Tease the Tiger for a $34.40 exactor.

Mindy Queen rolls by more than nine lengths

Mindy Queen, invading from Illinois, stalked the early pace under a snug hold and took charge into the final turn en route to an 9 1/4-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile Assiniboia Oaks.

Himynameisarah, one of three horses in the field who shipped in from Canterbury Park, closed for second money, a half-length ahead of Lady Countdown in the $30,000 supporting feature for 3-year-old fillies.

Mindy Queen, trained by Joel Berndt and ridden by Tanner Riggs, returned $4 as the favorite.

Honorable Lady captures Graduation

Honorable Lady, who prevailed in a front-end battle with odds-on choice One to Ponder, opened up into the stretch and had enough left to hold off the closers for a one-length victory in the $30,000 Graduation.

No Maddy completed a one-two sweep for fillies in the Graduation, a 5 1/2-furlong race for 2-year-olds. D.C. Dreamin finished another 1 1/4 lengths back in third.

Alan Cuthbertson rode Honorable Lady, who is trained by Clayton Gray and returned $10.90 as the second choice.
