Smooth Like Strait ready to work

Smooth Like Strait, one of the top turf milers in California, is scheduled to have a workout at Santa Anita this weekend that will determine whether the six-time stakes winner starts before the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Nov. 6 at Del Mar.

Smooth Like Strait won the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita in May to earn a fees-paid berth to the BC Mile. Smooth Like Strait finished second by a head to BC Mile hopeful Mo Forza in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on Aug. 21 in his latest start.

Smooth Like Strait has not had a workout since the Del Mar Mile. Trainer Michael McCarthy said in a text message Wednesday that Smooth Like Strait might prep for the Breeders’ Cup in the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile on Oct. 2 at Santa Anita.

Owned by Michael and Jennifer Cannon, Smooth Like Strait has won 7 of 17 starts and earned $1,043,823. Earlier this year, the 4-year-old Smooth Like Strait was supplemented to the Breeders’ Cup program for $50,000.
