Smash and Grab, Cutty Shark eye General George

Last weekend’s races at Laurel Park produced two possible runners for the Grade 3, $250,000 General George Handicap on Presidents Day, Feb. 16.

Smash and Grab won a fourth-level optional-claiming race at seven furlongs by 5 1/2 lengths Saturday, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 96. Smash and Grab has won 4 of his last 6 starts for trainer Damon Dilodovico.

Last Friday, Cutty Shark won a third-level optional claimer at seven furlongs, earning a 93 Beyer. Trainer Donald Barr said after the race that Cutty Shark, a winner of 3 of his last 5, would be pointed to the seven-furlong General George.

The highlight of Presidents Day weekend is the Grade 2, $300,000 Barbara Fritchie, a seven-furlong race for fillies and mares Saturday. The Fritchie and General George each have two $100,000 stakes scheduled for their undercards.
