Smarten euthanized at 27

Glenye Cain Oakford|Apr 01, 2003

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Smarten, winner of four derbies in 1979, died Monday at age 27. Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City, Md., announced that it had euthanized the pensioned stallion after he developed an intestinal blockage.

Smarten, by Cyane out of the Quibu mare Smartaire, is the sire of Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Classy 'n Smart; Grade 1 winners Prenup, Dance Teacher, and Smart N Slick; Group 1 winner Southern Arrow; and such graded stakes winners as Smart 'n Noble, Smart Alec, Smarten Up, and Smart Guy. Smarten was Maryland's top sire in 1989 and has more than $26 million in progeny earnings to date.

Smarten's 1979 victories included the Pennsylvania, American, Illinois, and Ohio derbies, the last in a track-record 1:47.40 for 1 1/8 miles.
