Slow Down Andy takes first steps on comeback trail

Slow Down Andy, a notable absentee from the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 26, has resumed light training for an expected return to racing in coming months, trainer Doug O’Neill said on Thursday.
“He got a little sore on us and we missed the Malibu,” O’Neill said. “He’s still at Santa Anita and in light training. He’ll hopefully pick up it a month or so.”
Slow Down Andy was rated as a contender for the $300,000 Malibu Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs. Taiba won the race, his third Grade 1 victory of the year.
Slow Down Andy has won 4 of 10 starts and $909,100, all for owners and breeders Paul and Zillah Reddam. A colt by Nyquist, Slow Down Andy has won three stakes, including the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity in 2021 and the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby on turf last September.
In his final start of 2022, Slow Down Andy finished third by 1 3/4 lengths to winner Cody’s Wish in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland on Nov. 5.
