Slew’s Tiz Whiz wins Governor's, Dontkissntell takes Washington Legislators
It was a big day for trainer Tom Wenzel, jockey Jose Zunino, and owner K D Thoroughbreds as they teamed up to win both stakes races at Emerald Downs on Sunday.
Slew’s Tiz Whiz took advantage of a fast and contested pace to decisively win the $50,000 Governor’s and Dontkissntell prevailed in a thrilling stretch drive to edge You Go Girl in the $50,000 Washington Legislators for fillies and mares.
Slew’s Tiz Whiz was well back while Papa’s Golden Boy and Windribbon dueled through a half-mile in 43.72 seconds. Windribbon backed out of it approaching the quarter-pole and Papa’s Golden Boy opened a clear lead turning for home.
Slew’s Tiz Whiz was under a full head of steam while moving along the inside on the turn, continued to roll while angling out four-wide in the stretch, and finished with a rush to win the 6 1/2-furlong sprint by 2 1/2 lengths. Papa’s Golden Boy shortened stride midstretch, but was able to hold off Spittin Image by a nose in a blanket finish for the runner-up spot. It was a neck back to Five Star General, who finished a head in front of Fantastic Day.
Slew’s Tiz Whiz paid $20.40 and posted a final time of 1:14.73.

It took a photo to show that Dontkissntell edged You Go Girl by a head in the Washington State Legislators. She paid $3.80 for her narrow victory in the 6 1/2-furlong dash.
With Zunino up, Dontkissntell broke alertly from the outside post in the five-horse field and settled into a stalking position while You Go Girl carved out interior fractions of 22.61 and 45.37 seconds. She was forced to go four-wide into and around the turn when Lets Declare Peace moved aggressively off the rail. Despite losing ground, Dontkissntell was still full of run turning for home and, after engaging You Go Girl just past the eighth pole, she prevailed in a thrilling duel to the wire. You Go Girl led from start to almost the finish before getting nipped at the wire. Lets Declare Peace moved off the rail to launch her bid on the turn but could not keep up late.
The final time was 1:15.65.
