Slammed, TCA Stakes winner, retired amid foot problems

Slammed, the winner of the Grade 2 TCA Stakes at Keeneland last October and five stakes in New Mexico earlier in her career, has been retired because of chronic foot problems, trainer and co-breeder Todd Fincher said on Sunday.

Slammed, a 5-year-old mare by the Bernardini stallion Marking, has not raced since she finished last of 12 in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland last November. In her preceding start, Slammed won the most prestigious race of her career in the $350,000 TCA Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs.

After a winter break, Slammed resumed training in New Mexico earlier this year, but was sidelined because of foot issues.

“We’ve had major foot problems and we can’t overcome it,” Fincher said. “I’d love to see her completely sound and let the world see what she can do.

“Things didn’t work out her way.”

Slammed has remained in a cooler climate at Fincher’s stable at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico since the retirement decision was made.

Co-owned by Brad King, Stan and Suzanne Kirby and Barbara Coleman, Slammed won 9 of 13 starts and earned $557,030. She won five stakes in New Mexico for statebreds in 2021 and early 2022 at The Downs at Albuquerque, Sunland Park and Zia Park at distances ranging from 5 1/2 furlongs to a mile.

Slammed was bred by Fincher and King.

Last summer, Slammed ran twice at Del Mar, winning an allowance race at six furlongs by 5 1/4 lengths in her California debut and finishing a game second to Edgeway in a thrilling running of the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Fincher said on Sunday that he plans to have a 12-horse stable at Del Mar this summer, including Senor Buscador, who was fifth in the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita on May 29.

The winner of the minor Curribot Handicap at Sunland Park in March in his first start of the year, Senor Buscador is under consideration for a start in stakes at Del Mar later this month.

On Sunday at Santa Anita, Senor Buscador worked five furlongs in 1:01.40. Senor Buscador has been based with trainer Mike Puype’s stable in recent months.
