Slammed has fifth win in row with Peppers Pride
Slammed won her fifth straight race with authority during the $1.5 million New Mexico Cup on Sunday at Zia Park when she moved out to a 4 3/4-length win over Our Time to Shine in the $100,000 Peppers Pride.
The race for fillies and mares was one of 12 stakes on the card, with eight for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses. The stakes for Thoroughbreds were each worth $100,000. The races were restricted to horses bred in New Mexico.
Slammed ($2.20) sat just off fractions of 23.37 seconds for the opening quarter and 46.77 for the half-mile before taking the lead through six furlongs in 1:11.88. She went on to cover the one-mile distance on a fast track in 1:37.31.
Tracy Hebert was aboard the daughter of Marking for trainer Todd Fincher. Slammed races for the partnership of Fincher Racing, Brad King and Suzanne Kirby.
Slammed was winning her fourth consecutive stakes in the Peppers Pride. Her current streak of five straight wins started in a June allowance at Ruidoso Downs. She then won that track’s Sierra Starlet Stakes before picking up two more stakes victories at the Downs at Albuquerque: the Carlos Salazar and the Petticoat.
Slammed has now won 6 of 7 starts and has earnings of $227,605.
Sprint winner pays $102
Strawberry Whisky pulled a 50-1 upset in the Sprint, when he closed from last for a length win over Evacuee. It was another length back in third to Hollywood Henry.
The winner paid $102.80 after covering six furlongs in 1:10.11.
Aldo Arboleda was aboard the son of Fusaichi Zenon for owner and trainer Celio Trujillo Jr.
* Jet N G ($10) rallied for a length win over Storm Bayou in the Rocky Gulch for 3-year-olds and up at a mile. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third to Next Affair. Rigo Sarmiento was aboard Jet N G, who covered the distance in 1:37.32. Gary Cross trains the son of Mr. Trieste for Maurcenia Cross.
* Proofsinthepudding ($3) was up for a nose win over Line Call in the Oaks. The winner covered six furlongs in 1:10.71. Roimes Chirinos was aboard the daughter of Marking for Reliance Ranches and trainer Todd Fincher.
* Tucum ($16) tracked the pace and went on to a four-length victory over Cheese Tray in the Derby. The winner covered six furlongs in 1:09.67. Enrique Gomez was aboard the son of King Bull for breeder Tucumcari Thoroughreds and trainer Danny Morales.
* Bella Dona ($2.20) improved her record to 5 for 6 when she returned to racing with fillies in the Lassie for 2-year-olds. She wired her rivals by 5 1/4 lengths, while covering six furlongs in 1:11.54. Luis Fuentes was aboard for the partnership of Robert Driggers, Del Rae Driggers, and Ben Lee Ivey. The daughter of Attila’s Storm is trained by Simon Buechler. Bella Dona had defeated males Sept. 19 in the New Mexico State Fair Futurity at Albuquerque.
* Sheza Dandy R F ($14.20) rallied for a half-length win over Let It Roll in the Distaff Sprint, covering six furlongs in 1:10.70. Casey Chavez was aboard the daughter of Attila’s Storm for Cesar Mendoza and trainer Robert Rivera.
* Wheres Brayden ($11.20) proved much the best in the Juvenile for 2-year-olds, rolling home in front by four lengths over Reads Pet Zenon. The winner covered six furlongs in 1:11.15. Enrique Gomez was aboard the son of Artful Run for breeder Dwain Yarbar and trainer Greg Green.
