Skylander Girl dominates Hendrie Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Skylander Girl buried a small but accomplished field of fillies and mares Saturday at Woodbine in the Grade 3 Hendrie Stakes.

Skylander Girl pressed 4-5 favorite Unspurned through a moderate opening quarter of 22.85 seconds in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint. She opened up a four-length lead on the turn, and then coasted home on top by 3 1/2 lengths under Emile Ramsammy. Her quick final time of 1:15.12 was just 0.62 seconds off the Polytrack record.

Maryland-based Miss Mischief rallied for second, and Unspurned flattened out to finish third in the six-horse field.

Skylander Girl ($8.10) banked $108,000 of the $173,400 purse for owner-trainer Alex Patykewich, who said he didn’t want her leading early.

“I told (Ramsammy) to let the speed go, and sit behind,” said Patykewich. “Every time Emile rides her, he sits just off the pace. I told him to let her run a half-mile, and then go after and they won’t catch her.”
