DEL MAR, Calif. – Back in January, before her ascension in the female sprint division in California, Skye Diamonds left trainer Bill Spawr speechless with her win in an optional claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita. The race was her second win for Spawr since being claimed for $40,000 last August. “She just took off and rebroke,” Spawr recalled on Friday. “It was amazing to watch. I just sat there. I was thinking, What just happened?” :: Just reduced! Save on Clocker Reports for Del Mar and Saratoga Since then, Skye Diamonds has won three races, including the Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 8. The recent win leaves Skye Diamonds the filly to beat in Sunday’s Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar. Skye Diamonds is part of a strong field of five that includes Constellation, who won the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita last December; Bendable, who won the Grade 3 Desert Stormer Stakes at Santa Anita on June 18; and Munny Spunt and Rockport Babe, who won their last starts in overnight races and will be longer-priced runners. The race is considered a key prep for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint here on Nov. 4. :: Get bonus PPs for Sunday's Emerald Downs all-stakes pick four, including the Grade 3 Longacres Mile KEY CONTENDERS Skye Diamonds, by First Dude Last 3 Beyers: 99-95-95 ◗ Skye Diamonds has won 4 of 5 starts this year, with her only loss a respectable second to Vale Dori in the Grade 3 Adoration Stakes at Santa Anita on May 7. In sprints, Skye Diamonds is unbeaten in three starts this year. ◗ Spawr said Skye Diamonds has thrived at Del Mar, and was particularly enthused by a five-furlong workout in 1:00.80 on Aug. 7. Skye Diamonds ran the opening quarter-mile in 25.60 seconds and finished the final quarter-mile in 23 seconds, Spawr said. “You don’t do that on this track,” he said. “She’s for real.” ◗ Skye Diamonds beat a strong field in the Great Lady M. Constellation was second, finishing 2 1/4 lengths in front of Finest City, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita last November and the champion female sprinter of 2016. Finest City is not scheduled to start again until the BC Filly and Mare Sprint. Constellation, by Bellamy Road Last 3 Beyers: 94-91-87 ◗ Constellation has been second in three consecutive sprints for fillies and mares in California and Kentucky since winning the La Brea. She was second in the Grade 3 Los Flores Stakes at Santa Anita in March and second, beaten a neck, in the Grade 1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland in April. The losing streak has not discouraged trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who says Constellation can benefit from the recent start in the Great Lady M. “She should have gotten a lot of out of that race,” he said. “We thought she ran really well when she won the Grade 1 and we think she has the ability.” Bendable, by Horse Greeley Last 3 Beyers: 97-84-85 ◗ Bendable won the Desert Stormer in her first start of the year, and one that led trainer Richard Mandella to consider her a candidate for the BC Filly and Mare Sprint. “She showed me enough to be a good filly last year,” Mandella said. “We figured if she came back, we’d plan that way.” The Rancho Bernardo will be Bendable’s seventh start and the longest race of her career.
