The Scarlet and Gray Handicap will be run Sunday at ThistleDown for the first time. The six-furlong race for Ohio-bred older fillies and mares formerly was run at Beulah Park on the Saturday of the first Ohio State home football game. A field of 11 was drawn, with several Ohio-breds from outside tracks taking a crack at their statebred foes. Key contenders Sky Crew (Last 3 Beyers: 84-40-70) * Won her maiden race last out Aug. 4 at Saratoga by nearly seven lengths. The 84 Beyer Speed Figure earned in that race is the highest last-race Beyer in this field and the highest dirt figure for any entrant. * One of three 3-year-olds in the field. * Cross-entered to run Saturday at Charles Town. * Making her first start against statebred company. Floral Sky (Last 3 Beyers: 78-67-86) * Also facing statebred company for the first time. She was claimed for $40,000 in her last start at Woodbine by trainer Tony Rini for Loooch Stables, which also owns Sky Crew. She has been racing on turf this year but boasts a win on a fast track. * Will add blinkers for the first time. Blazing Bling (Last 3 Beyers: 67-68-44) * Has a two-race winning streak at six furlongs for trainer Tim Hamm. * Has won 6 of 13 locally. Devil’s Lil Bit (Last 3 Beyers: 45-67-46) * She has been racing at Presque Isle Downs this year, but the 9-year-old has faced statebred company before. A return to statebred company should be to her liking.
