Skelly, the $1.7 million earner who was freshened following an uncharacteristic 10th-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, is now back in training, according to trainer Steve Asmussen. “He just came back in,” Asmussen said. “He’s at the Fair Grounds.” Skelly, now 6, is a six-time stakes winner for Red Lane Thoroughbreds. Valentine Candy is another sprinter of significance for the barn who is gearing back up for competition after a freshening. The six-time stakes winner has earned more than $1 million for Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, Jackpot Farm, and Whispering Oaks Farm. “He had a strong year last year,” said Asmussen, noting the horse is now back in training at Fair Grounds. Skelly and Valentine Candy are both on pace to race later in the meet at Oaklawn. “Those two horses have won about eight stakes between them at Oaklawn,” Asmussen said. “That’s where they want to run.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
