Six supporting stakes races on Saturday's Pegasus program

Marty McGee|Jan 23, 2017

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Prior to the spectacle of Saturday's inaugural Pegasus World Cup, six supporting stakes are on the Gulfstream Park program. The Pegasus goes as the last of 12 races on a card that starts at 11:30 a.m. Eastern.

In order of purse value, here’s a quick rundown of those undercard races:

-- $400,000 Poseidon (race 5, post 1:30): The inaugural running of this handicap for older horses has Stanford as the 120-pound highweight in a field of nine. Stanford is one of two Todd Pletcher trainees in the 1 1/8-mile race, along with Madefromlucky (117), an also-eligible for the Pegasus. Imperative (118) has shipped in from California to make his first start for Loooch Racing and trainer Bob Hess Jr.

-- Grade 3, $200,000 W.L. McKnight Handicap (race 11, post 4:50): This 1 1/2-mile turf race came up a real corker with 12 starters, and thus its positioning as the lead-in to the Pegasus. Mike Maker has three viable contenders in Taghleeb, Charming Kitten, and Generous Kitten in a race that drew such other proven entities as Mr Maybe, Danish Dynaformer, Twilight Eclipse, and Patterson Cross.

-- Grade 3, $200,000 La Prevoyante (race 10, post 4:14): This filly-mare counterpart to the McKnight shapes up as one of the most competitive races on the card after drawing 12 fillies and mares. The 1-2-3 finishers in the recent Via Borghese – Paige, Desiree Clary, and Flipcup – are part of a deep lineup, along with Arles, Suffused, Try Your Luck, and six others.

-- $125,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint (race 9, post 3:38): Mongolian Saturday, the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner, and Power Alert, winner of this race last year, are among the principals in another well-matched field of 12. Long On Value will be taking an interesting turn-back from longer races for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.

-- $125,000 Ladies’ Turf Sprint (race 7, post 2:32): Yet one more field of 12 goes in this 5-furlong dash, and it’s about as wide-open as the others. Top contenders include the top three finishers from a recent stakes at Tampa – Triple Chelsea, Nite Delite, and Everything Lovely – along with divisional mainstays Spectacular Me and Brandy’s Girl.

-- Grade 3, $100,000 Hurricane Bertie (race 3, post 12:30): Genre will cut back in distance as the likely favorite for Pletcher in a field of eight fillies and mares in this seven-furlong race. Other notables include Bodacious Babe, a last-out winner of the ungraded Margate Stakes, and You Bought Her, the runner-up in the Sunshine Millions Distaff here Saturday.
