As the under-tack preview show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s spring sale of 2-year-olds in training reached its midpoint Wednesday evening, a half-dozen juveniles were tied for the fastest furlong, the traditional yardstick. Through three of six sessions on the Ocala Training Center's all-weather Safetrack surface, six 2-year-olds had worked their furlong in 9 4/5 seconds to stand atop the leaderboard in advance of the sale, set to take place from April 20-23. The OBS spring sale offers by far the most juveniles of any North American auction – more than 1,200 hips are cataloged this year – and tests the market at a number of levels. Fillies by two-time reigning leading sire Into Mischief and last year's breakout filly sire Daredevil were among the bullet workers, along with colts by Cairo Prince, Midnight Storm, Speightstown, and Twirling Candy. This is the first crop for versatile Grade 1 winner Midnight Storm. Among the juveniles working a quarter-mile, fillies by first-crop sires Classic Empire and Cupid were tied for the overall bullet through three sessions, each going in 20 2/5 seconds. Classic Empire, the Eclipse Award juvenile champion of 2016, and Grade 1 winner Cupid both stand at Coolmore's Ashford Stud.
