ELMONT, N.Y. – Sistercharlie, the reigning older female turf champion and two-time Grade 1 winner this year, and Bricks and Mortar, the leading older male turf horse, worked five furlongs together in 1:01.06 over the Belmont Park turf course Sunday morning as they prepare for their next assignments. Sistercharlie, winner of the Grade 1 Diana and Grade 1 Beverly D., is pointing to the Grade 1 Flower Bowl here on Oct. 6. Plans have not yet been finalized for Bricks and Mortar, who has won all five of his starts this year including four Grade 1 stakes. He most recently won the Arlington Million on Aug. 10. Whit Beckman, the assistant to trainer Chad Brown, said the reason the two worked together was because they were both scheduled to work five furlongs whereas Brown’s other turf workers Sunday morning went half-miles. Sistercharlie, under Walter Melasquez, and Bricks and Mortar, with Daniel Bernardini up, went their first quarter in 25.38 seconds and got their last three furlongs in 35.68 while galloping out strong. Also working on the turf Sunday for Brown were Rushing Fall and Uni, who went together in 49 seconds. Both are candidates for the Grade 1 First Lady at Keeneland.
