Sister Lou Ann wins Martha Washington; California Frolic takes Not Surprising

Sister Lou Ann was a sharp winner off the bench in the $75,000 Martha Washington on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, leading throughout for a 1 1/4-length victory over Saturday Nite Girl.
The race was one of two stakes on the card.
In the $75,000 Not Surpising, which was moved from turf to Tapeta, the winner was California Frolic ($5.80).
Sister Lou Ann ($6.80) was making her first start since December, when she was second in the $75,000 Wait a While in her turf debut at Gulfstream. In the Martha Washington, she set the pace and had more over the turf course rated “good” to cover. She completed the about 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-old fillies in a hand-timed 1:48.60.

The time is according to the official chart of the race. The final time posted after the race was 1:44.88, with fractions of 25.36 for the opening quarter, 51.25 for the half-mile and 1:16.37 for six furlongs.
Leonel Reyes was aboard Sister Lou Ann for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.
The win was a sentimental one as Sister Lou Ann was bred by owner Ken Ramsey and his late wife, Sarah Ramsey. She died in May.
Sister Lou Ann is by Frosted and out of the stakes-winning mare Granny Mc’s Kitten. She is now 2 for 4 and was winning her first stakes Saturday.
In the Not Suprising, California Frolic settled off the pace set by Old Town Road, overtook that one into the stretch, then held off a late run from Treasure King for a neck win. The winner covered the 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-olds on a fast track in 1:45.75.
The race was hand timed, according to the official chart.
Edgar Perez was aboard the winner for trainer Armando Perez.
The Not Surprising was the second career stakes win for California Frolic, behind the English Channel at Gulfstream. The son of California Chrome is now 4 for 7 for owner Julian De Mora Jr.
Klugman finished third, 5 1/2 lengths behind runner-up Treasure King.
