Siskin puts win streak on line in Group 1 Phoenix at the Curragh
Siskin, who has won all three of his starts by at least two lengths, will be favored against four rivals in Friday’s Group 1 Phoenix Stakes for 2-year-old colts and fillies at the Curragh Racecourse in Ireland.
Trained by Ger Lyons for Juddmonte Farms, Siskin was a winner at the Curragh on June 29 in the Grade 2 Railway Stakes. He won that six-furlong race by 2 1/2 lengths over Monarch of Egypt, a colt by American Pharoah trained by Aidan O’Brien who is part of the field for the $336,360 Phoenix Stakes.
Siskin, by First Defence, will be ridden by Colin Keane, who has been aboard for the colt’s three wins. In each of those starts, Siskin has raced near the front throughout.
O’Brien has three of the five runners, including Mount Fuji and Royal Lytham.
Royal Lytham won the Group 3 July Stakes for colts and geldings at six furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse in England on July 11, while Mount Fuji was fifth in the Grade 3 Anglesey Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs at the Curragh on July 20.
Monarch of Egypt had his stakes debut, and second start, in the Railway Stakes.
The outsider in the field will be Think Big, the winner of a minor race at Down Royal Racecourse near Belfast on July 26.
