SirePowered Results: Young stallions rule Derby

DRF Breeding Staff|May 04, 2015

The Kentucky Derby marked a major coup for young stallions. Winner American Pharoah hails from the second crop of Pioneerof the Nile; runner-up Firing Line is a first-crop representative for Line of David; and third-place finisher Dortmund is from the third crop of Big Brown.

It was a productive weekend for Pioneerof the Nile, who stands at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky. According to Daily Racing Form’s SirePowered Results, the sire was represented by three winners at Churchill Downs on the weekend, as Killer Partner won a maiden special weight race and Awesome Jill won an optional-claiming event. American Pharoah, of course, earned the highest Beyer Speed Figure of the trio, posting a 105 for his Derby victory.

Like American Pharoah, Pioneerof the Nile raced as a homebred for Zayat Stables and was trained by Bob Baffert. The son of Empire Maker won 5 of 10 starts, with his career highlighted by a win in the Santa Anita Derby and a second in the Kentucky Derby. Likewise, his progeny have displayed distance ability. His first crop includes Cairo Prince and Vinceremos, both graded stakes winners on the 2014 Triple Crown trail, and Social Inclusion, third in the Preakness Stakes. American Pharoah won the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby this season en route to becoming his sire’s first classic winner.

Line of David, a Lion Heart horse who stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., won the 2010 Arkansas Derby and is now represented by a classic-placed runner from his first crop in Firing Line. SirePowered Results shows nine wins for his progeny this year, highlighted by Firing Line’s win in the Grade 3 Sunland Derby and Cross the Line’s score in the California Derby.

Big Brown, by Boundary, won the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes en route to a championship. Now standing at Dutchess Views Farm in Pine Plains, N.Y., his progeny have won 31 races already this year according to SirePowered Results, with a trio of graded stakes victories from Dortmund.
