SirePowered Results: Pioneerof the Nile

Barbara D. Livingston American Pharoah, by Pioneerof the Nile, trains at Churchill Downs on Sunday.

Following a bullet work at Churchill Downs, juvenile champion American Pharoah, an open-lengths winner of both his starts this year, looms as the heavy favorite for the Kentucky Derby. The colt, who races for his breeder, Zayat Stables, and is trained by Bob Baffert, is the son of another standout for the same connections – WinStar Farm stallion Pioneerof the Nile, who finished second in the 2009 Kentucky Derby.

According to Daily Racing Form's SirePowered Results, Pioneerof the Nile recorded four winners from April 1 to April 25 – and now looks to land the biggest prize of them all. One of the young sire’s victories this month, of course, came from American Pharoah, who romped in the Arkansas Derby on April 11 at Oaklawn Park for his fourth straight win and third career Grade 1 triumph. The colt is out of the Yankee Gentleman mare Littleprincessemma.

American Pharoah recorded a Beyer Speed Figure of 105 for his latest victory – a figure that was matched by Midnight Storm the following week. That runner, who is out of the Bertrando mare My Tina, posted that figure while winning an optional-claiming event on April 16 at Santa Anita.

Pioneerof the Nile’s other two winners in the span were King Ptolemy, out of the Pulpit mare My McIntosh, who won a maiden special weight race on April 2 at Oaklawn; and Lady Bling, out of the Kris S. mare Spangled, who won an optional-claiming event on April 18 at Aqueduct.

Pioneerof the Nile won five of his 10 career starts, including Grade 1 scores in the CashCall Futurity and Santa Anita Derby. The son of Empire Maker entered stud at WinStar in 2010 and has already made his presence as a sire felt in major events. His top runners include Cairo Prince and Vinceremos, both graded stakes winners on the 2014 Triple Crown trail, and Social Inclusion, third in that year’s Preakness Stakes. American Pharoah would be his first classic winner.
