Hard Not to Like
Benoit & Associates Hard Not to Like wins the Gamely Stakes on Monday at Santa Anita Park.

With her victory in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes on Memorial Day at Santa Anita Park, the Ontario-bred racemare Hard Not to Like added to the worldwide reputation of her sire Hard Spun. The stallion – who currently is based at Darley’s American headquarters in Lexington, Ky. – has five graded/group stakes winners in four different countries thus far in 2015, according to DRF’s SirePowered Results.

Hard Not to Like posted a Beyer Speed Figure of 93 for the Gamely, her second career Grade 1 tally after winning last year’s Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland. The mare has not missed the board in three starts, all in graded stakes company, this season. She came into the Gamely off a third in her Jenny Wiley defense.

Hard Spun’s other group stakes winners this season are Ertiljaal in the Group 1 Investec Cape Derby in South Africa; San Nicasio in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes Tarquin in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes, both in Australia; and Maftool in the Group 3 U.A.E. 2000 Guineas.

Competing against one of the better crops in recent years, the consistent Hard Spun won six stakes during his own career, highlighted by the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes and the Grade 2 Kentucky Cup Classic, defeating Kentucky Derby winner and rival Street Sense in the latter. He finished second in the Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic and third in the Preakness Stakes, the latter two races won by Curlin. Hard Spun entered stud in 2008 and his career has been highlighted by the champion Questing and the Grade 1 winners Wicked Strong, Hard Not to Like, Hardest Core, and Zo Impressive.
