Irish Jasper wins the Miss Preakness
Nikki Sherman Irish Jasper remains unbeaten under Kendrick Carmouche with this score in the Miss Preakness Stakes on Friday.

With the eyes of the racing world on Pimlico, young sire First Defence enjoyed a solid weekend, as he was represented by Grade 3 Miss Preakness winner Irish Jasper and Sir Barton Stakes winner Fame and Power. According to Daily Racing Form’s SirePowered Results, the Juddmonte Farms sire is represented by five individual stakes winners this year, in the U.S., Hong Kong, and Ireland.

The Miss Preakness, contested Friday at Pimlico, was the second stakes victory this season for Irish Jasper, who also won the Belle Harbor Stakes last month at Aqueduct. The filly posted a Beyer Speed Figure of 89 while taking the Miss Preakness by 1 1/4 lengths. Irish Jasper, who is out of the Mr. Greeley mare Irish Connection, has now won 5 of 8 career starts for owner and trainer Derek Ryan.

Fame and Power, who races as a homebred for Juddmonte, earned his first career stakes victory while taking the Sir Barton by three lengths on the Preakness undercard, posting a 99 Beyer. The colt, who is out of the Storm Cat mare Storming On, had finished third in the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes in his prior outing.

First Defence's other stakes winners this season are Dundonnell, winner of the Group 2 Sprint Cup in Hong Kong; Tombelaine, winner of the Tetrarch Stakes in Ireland; and S U M Racer, winner of the Arizona Oaks.

Regally bred First Defence won or placed in five stakes during his own career, with his best performances a victory in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes and a runner-up effort in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes, both at Saratoga. Now standing at Juddmonte’s U.S. location in Lexington, Ky., he is best known as the sire of champion Close Hatches, a five-time Grade 1 winner.

First Defence is out of Grade 1 winner Honest Lady, making him a half-brother to stakes winners Phantom Rose and Honest Quality. The second dam is blue hen Toussaud, dam of Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker, additional Grade/Group 1 winners Chester House and Chiselling, and Grade 2 winner Decarchy.
