Sire Sharp Azteca has two same-day stakes winners

Nicole Russo|Jul 31, 2022
Sharp Azteca
Barbara D. Livingston Freshman sire Sharp Azteca has been represented by 12 individual winners from 30 starters through July 30 this year.

A year after Horse of the Year Gun Runner shattered the North American earnings record for a freshman sire, Three Chimneys Farm has another young stallion poised to make a run at this year’s freshman accolades. Sharp Azteca, who stands at the Midway, Ky., facility, was represented by two first-crop stakes winners on Saturday, both of whom posted efforts that rank among the best Beyer Speed Figures this year for 2-year-olds.

Tyler’s Tribe earned the second stakes victory of his young career on Saturday, adding a 12 1/2-length victory in the Iowa Stallion Futurity to a win in the Prairie Gold Juvenile earlier in July to his resume. The gelding has won his three starts by a combined 37 3/4 lengths. Tyler’s Tribe posted a Beyer of 90 in the Iowa Stallion Futurity, after posting an 86 in the Prairie Gold. He is one of three juveniles to break the 90 threshold through Saturday, joining Munnys Gold, who earned a 101 in a smashing debut at Monmouth, and Gulfport, who ran a 91 while winning the Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs.

Sharp Azteca’s second stakes winner on Saturday was Sharp Aza Tack, who remained unbeaten in two starts with a 7 1/4-length victory in the Tyro Stakes sprinting on Monmouth’s turf. The colt earned an 85 Beyer, tied with the number Mo Strike posted in winning Saratoga’s Grade 3 Sanford for the fifth-highest by a 2-year-old through July 30.

Sharp Azteca is represented by 12 individual winners from 30 starters through July 30, leading this freshman class in that category. He sits third on the earnings list behind Triple Crown winner Justify and Bolt d’Oro; he and Justify lead the class with two stakes winners each, although Justify’s duo have both come in graded/group company.

Sharp Azteca is a representative of the Storm Cat sireline; he is by dominant New York sire Freud, a full brother to leading sire Giant’s Causeway. Sharp Azteca retired with more than $2 million in earnings and five graded stakes wins, highlighted by the Grade 1 Cigar Mile over Mind Your Biscuits and Practical Joke.
