Sir Winston prevails in Display Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The sleek chestnut Sir Winston ($10.20) made his first start with blinkers a winning one in Saturday’s $100,600 Display Stakes at Woodbine.
D Magician set moderate fractions along the inside in the 1 1/16-mile test for 2-year-old, as Sir Winston took up the chase in second.
Sir Winston inherited the lead entering the stretch, and then held off a charging Inclusive to prevail by one length in a time of 1:45.02.
The Maryland shipper Global Access came along the inside to finish another two lengths back in third. The favored The Boss Factor faded to fourth after a three-wide stalking trip in the nine-horse event.
Jerome Lermyte rode Sir Winston for trainer Mark Casse, who was winning the Display for the fifth time.
“I thought there would be some speed,” Lermyte said. “I thought maybe one or two more, but they didn’t come early. That was perfect for me. I just didn’t want to be behind one that would stop, so I took the decision to come out a little bit. The trainer asked me to be a little bit closer today, and it paid off.”
Sir Winston, a son of 1997 Queen’s Plate winner Awesome Again, earned $60,000 for owner-breeder Tracy Farmer.
