Sir Prancelot colt, filly top Northern California sale
Average prices for yearlings declined at Wednesday’s Northern California yearling and horses of racing age sale at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton.
According to results released by the sale organizers, the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, 107 yearlings sold for a gross of $894,700 or an average of $8,362. The median price was $4,500.
There were 14 yearlings withdrawn and 12 listed as not sold.
The sale average marks the end of four years of increases in that category for yearlings and was down 10.5 percent from the 2021 average of $9,349.
On Wednesday, 15 horses of racing age sold for an average of $3,533 and a median price of $3,000.
A colt and filly by Sir Prancealot were two of the yearlings that sold for $40,000 or more.
A colt by Sir Prancealot was the most expensive hip of the sale, selling for $50,000 to Robert Jones of San Leandro, Calif. Consigned by Checkmate Thoroughbreds, the colt is out of the Union Rags mare Root Beer Rag and is her first foal. Root Beer Rag was winless in three starts in California in the winter of 2019-20.
A filly by Vronsky was purchased for $45,000 by Northern California trainer Andy Mathis from the consignment of Harris Farms. The filly is out of Eden Mirelle, by Cyclotron, the dam of the nine-time winner Surf Kitten.
A filly Sir Prancealot was purchased for $40,000 by Harris Farms from Checkmate Thoroughbreds. The filly is the first foal out of Frankly J’ray, by Frankel. Frankly J’ray was winless in four starts in New York and the mid-Atlantic in 2018.
The Pleasanton sale was the first of two yearling sales in California this year. Fasig-Tipton will conduct a sale of yearlings and horses of racing age in Pomona on Sept. 27.
