Sir London targets Robert Lewis Stakes

CYPRESS, Calif. – Sir London, the 10-length winner of a maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds at a mile on Saturday at Los Alamitos, is scheduled to begin his 2022 campaign in the Grade 3 Robert Lewis Stakes on Feb. 6 at Santa Anita.
“We can give him a little time and most likely point for the Bob Lewis,” trainer Simon Callaghan said Sunday.
Ridden by Flavien Prat, Sir London disputed the early pace in the maiden race and pulled clear through the stretch to win as the 3-10 favorite.
“We were hopeful that he’d put on a good performance and show that he handles a mile,” Callaghan said. “He passed all of those tests.”
Owned by AMO Racing USA and Qatar Racing, Sir London is by Malibu Moon and was purchased for $700,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale in Maryland in May.
Saturday’s race was Sir London’s third start, preceded by second-place finishes in maiden races for sprinters at Santa Anita in October and Del Mar last month.
Roman Centurian, second by a neck in the 2021 Lewis for Callaghan, is scheduled to rejoin the stable in early 2022. Unraced since a fourth in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita in March, Roman Centurian is in training at WinStar Farm in Kentucky.
“The plan is to stay there until the new year,” Callaghan said. “He will come out here in the first week of January. He will have done some breezes and have a decent level of fitness.
“Hopefully, he’ll be a nice addition to the older division.”
◗ Los Alamitos has pushed forward post times for the four-day racing week from Thursday through Sunday afternoons. Racing will begin at 12:30 p.m. Pacific on Thursday and Friday and at noon on Saturday and Sunday. The Sunday program is the final card of the track’s two-week December meeting.
