Singsong on improve for Wednesday allowance
OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer John Kimmel got a jump on the holiday travelers by driving to south Florida on Monday morning, but his focus will be on New York on Wednesday, when he sends out Singsong in a $57,000, first-level allowance for New York-bred juvenile fillies on the turf, the fifth race on Aqueduct’s nine-race program.
Singsong, a $300,000 purchase as a 2-year-old in training at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. auction in April, is coming off a maiden win at Belmont on Oct. 30 in her third career start.
“She’s a pretty good-sized filly, and I think she’s getting more out of her races than what I do with her in the morning,” Kimmel said. “So, with each race, I think it’s going to move her forward. I’m looking forward to seeing that happen again with her.”
Singsong, a daughter of Unbridled’s Song, finished fifth on dirt at Saratoga on Sept. 2 in her debut, a race that produced two next-out winners. Singsong ran on turf Oct. 9, finishing fourth, 2 1/2 lengths behind Flatware, who is in this race. Three weeks later, Singsong overcame post 11 in a 12-horse field in a 1 1/16-mile statebred maiden race on turf. She stalked a modest pace and drew clear to win by 1 1/2 lengths.
“The first grass race, she got banged around a little bit,” Kimmel said.
Singsong will break from post 7 in what will be an eight-horse field after the scratch of main-track-only entrant B Three.
Other contenders in the field include Flatware, Wild About Harry, and Eloweasel.
KEY CONTENDERS
Singsong (Last 3 Beyers: 63-56-35)
◗ This filly seems to be improving with each race and with added distances. She is one of just two horses in the field to have won at 1 1/16 miles, the distance of this race.
“She’s improving all the time, and I think the distance is something she’s going to continue to improve at,” Kimmel said. “She’s very sound. She’s enjoying her training. I’d be pretty surprised if she didn’t have another forward move off of that race.”
Wild About Harry (Last 3 Beyers: 70-65-59)
◗ Defeated New York-breds sprinting at Belmont on Sept. 12 in a maiden race before getting beat seven lengths in the Grade 3 Miss Grillo and 5 1/2 lengths in the Chelsey Flower, both open-company stakes going a distance of ground.
“In the Chelsey Flower, I thought she had an opportunity to get a bigger piece of it,” trainer Tom Bush said. “The jock wasn’t very aggressive. She may have lacked a little room in that spot. She got a perfect ride in the Miss Grillo.”
◗ Javier Castellano, aboard for the maiden win, is reunited with the Wild About Harry on Wednesday.
