Single equine herpesvirus case reported at Remington
The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture announced Friday tests have confirmed a horse euthanized Tuesday at Remington Park was positive for equine herpesvirus. It is the EHV-1 strain. The barn where the horse was stabled has been placed under a 14-day quarantine.
Remington was to race Friday night, confirmed track spokesman Dale Day.
There are no restrictions on shipping of horses in and out of the stable area, said Day, with the exception of the quarantined barn. Day confirmed that Welder, the reigning Oklahoma-bred of the Year who is entered in a Friday night stakes, is on the grounds and scheduled to race. Welder ships in from a farm near Tulsa, Okla.
The lab results ran through the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.
The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture “was informed last night of a positive EHV-1 test sample from a horse at Remington Park,” Michael Herrin, assistant state veterinarian for the department, said in the press release. “This horse was euthanized Tuesday evening and the barn it was housed in is currently under quarantine.”
The horses in the quarantined barn will be monitored and tested in the case of fever.
Remington races through Dec. 15.
