SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - After watching Simply Ravishing run away from her three rivals to a smashing 6 1/2-length victory in Wednesday’s $100,000 P.G. Johnson Stakes, a race taken off the turf and decided at seven furlongs over the main track, trainer Ken McPeek’s first reaction was, “I wonder if I should have put her in the Spinaway instead.” McPeek was referring to the Grade 1 Spinaway for 2-year-old fillies, which will be decided at seven furlongs here Sunday.  Simply Ravishing launched her career a month earlier, winning a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight on turf. She stalked the pace before posting a one-length victory while earning a mere 50 Beyer Speed Figure. Even though Simply Ravishing made her debut on grass, McPeek wasn’t losing any sleep when heavy rain began falling over the local area on Wednesday, ultimately forcing the P.G. Johnson to be switched to a fast main track. With jockey Luis Saez aboard, Simply Ravishing disputed the early pace with even-money favorite Con Lima, one of two fillies trainer Todd Pletcher ran along with Union Gables, both of whom were designated main-track-only entrants. Simply Ravishing readily disposed of Con Lima entering the stretch, quickly opened a commanding advantage, and was being geared down nearing the wire. She completed the distance in a lively 1:21.85.  :: Play Saratoga with DRF! Thursday was fourth and last in a field that scratched down from seven to four starters once the race was taken off the turf. Simply Ravishing, a New York-bred daughter of Laoban, paid $7.30. “She’s been impressive in the morning on the dirt and is one of those fillies who’ll do everything you ask her to do,” McPeek said by phone from Kentucky after the race. “I loved the way Luis was sitting on her even when dueling for the lead. She was just cruising along. That was awfully impressive, wasn’t it?” McPeek said in light of this performance, he will keep Simply Ravishing on the dirt for the time being. “We ran her on turf the first time because I felt she needed the distance,” said McPeek. “After this, maybe I’ll just keep her around for the Frizette [a Grade 1 at Belmont on Oct. 10] or bring her to Keeneland for the Alcibiades (a Grade 1 on Oct. 2).   Recent claim Officer Hutchy wins Park Avenue Officer Hutchy returned quick dividends off the claim for trainer Rob Atras and owner Sanford Goldfarb, coming back 18 days after being haltered for $25,000 to register a half-length victory over Spin a Yarn in the Park Avenue division of the New York Stallion Series. Officer Hutchy, who earned far and away a career best Beyer Speed Figure of 89 when defeating conditioned claiming opposition on Aug. 16, got a perfect pace-stalking trip under jockey Dylan Davis. The New York bred 3-year-old daughter of Boys At Tosconova ranged up outside the dueling leaders turning for home before ultimately wearing down Spin a Yarn to win going away. Spin a Yarn entered the 6 1/2-furlong Park Avenue for 3-year-old fillies undefeated in four previous starts, all at Finger Lakes. She forced the early pace of Big Q, put that one away in early stretch, dug in gamely, but proved no match for the winner at the end. The Important One finished 1 1/4 lengths further back in third. Spin a Yarn covered 6 1/2 furlongs over a fast track in 1:15.37 and paid $5.50 as the tepid favorite in a field of seven statebred 3-year-old fillies. “She broke running, Dylan put her in a perfect spot just off the pace,” said Atras. “The other filly is an undefeated filly, tough to run down, I was really happy with her [Officer Hutchy] today.”
