Silver Union takes on Fioretti in Sunday feature
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLEOne of the shortest fields Sunday is the featured eighth race, a $28,000, second-level allowance with a $40,000 claiming condition that drew eight fillies sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs on the Polytrack.
Fair Grounds shipper Silver Union looks poised to recapture her top form against easier company at Turfway. She is trained by Mike Maker, the winter-meet leader, and ridden by the meet’s top jockey, Albin Jimenez.
Sixth in New Orleans on Dec. 26, Silver Union previously had finished third Nov. 28 at Churchill Downs. She has raced just once on a synthetic surface, finishing eighth with a troubled trip when returning from a layoff in a race last spring at Keeneland.
Favored at 5-2 is the recent Turfway winner Fioretti, with Perry Ouzts in the saddle. Ouzts tied Jimenez for leading rider during the holiday meet, which was run in December.
In one prior meeting between the two fillies, Fioretti finished fifth, 7 1/4 lengths behind the victorious Silver Union, in an allowance race on the Churchill Downs main track Sept. 27.
