SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Silver Skillet had already shown herself a better horse on turf than dirt. Wednesday, she showed a new dimension that could make her an above average turf horse in the future. Sitting sixth, eight lengths behind the pace under Joel Rosario, Silver Skillet showed a heretofore unseen closing kick to win Wednesday’s $125,000 Suzie O’Cain Stakes for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies by 3 1/4 lengths at Saratoga. Orange Freeze, a slight favorite over Silver Skillet who was coming off a victory in a New York Stallion Stakes race here on July 19, rallied from the back of the pack to be second, three-quarters of a length over Bernt Again. Smokie Eyes, a stablemate of Silver Skillet, finished fourth, followed by Thundara, Snowy Evening, Im Just Kiddin, Kosuke, and Collaboration. Silver Skillet, a daughter of Liam’s Map, made it two straight wins on turf following a narrow defeat in an allowance race at Belmont Park in June. Her previous victory came in allowance company here on July 15, when she stalked the pace from second. :: DRF's 2023 Saratoga headquarters: Previews, past performances, picks, recaps, news, and more. Owing to a turf course that had plenty of moisture in it, trainer Christophe Clement wanted jockey Joel Rosario to conserve Silver Skillet early in the Suzie O’Cain. Though Silver Skillet was a bit rank early in the race, Rosario got her to settle on the backside, then with a five-wide move turning for home, she kicked away from the field. “I told him before the race there’s still plenty of juice in the turf, I said be sure you save something quarter pole to wire,” Clement said. Clement noted that his other filly, Smokie Eyes, “actually moved a bit too early and paid for it in the end,” he said. It didn’t look pretty for Silver Skillet going into the first turn. She was tossing her head about and seemed to bobble for a stride or two entering the clubhouse turn. “She’s kind of funny with her head, her mouth a little bit,” Rosario said. “[If] you grab her too much she [cocks] her head a little bit. Then into the turn you have to be nice and easy, I don’t want to get too much in the mouth. She did really well and after that I feel really confident down the backside.” Rosario said the quick early pace - the fractions were 23.71 for the quarter and 46.80 for the half - helped get her a little further back. “There was a little bit more speed today than last time,” Rosario said. “Christophe told me to just be comfortable, don’t take her back but also don’t get in a hurry with her and take my time. When I made my move on the turn, I had a lot of horse.” :: Get Saratoga Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Reeves said the horse is named for his favorite breakfast and lunch restaurant in Atlanta from his days at Georgia Tech. “We’re going to take a win photo and all of us go have breakfast there one morning and present them with a win photo of this great filly,” Reeves said. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
